If you have been told you are manglik, that is the beginning of the analysis and not the end of it. The same classical works that define mangal dosha also set out the conditions under which it does not apply. A matching that reports the dosha without checking those conditions has done perhaps a third of the job.
This matters because the verdict carries real weight. Marriage discussions in Indian families are called off on it every week, often over a chart nobody examined for more than a minute.
What is mangal dosha?
Mars placed in the first, second, fourth, seventh, eighth or twelfth house of a birth chart is held to create mangal dosha, also called kuja dosha in the South and manglik in the North. The reasoning is that Mars governs heat, assertion and conflict, and that these houses touch the self, family speech, domestic peace, marriage, longevity and the marital bed. Mars sitting in them is read as strain placed directly on married life.
That is the rule as it is usually quoted. What follows it in the texts is a long list of exceptions, and those are what get skipped.
Why do so many charts show it?
Count the houses. Six of twelve are implicated, which is half the chart. Mars has no preference for where it falls, so on the quick check alone a very large share of charts will show the dosha before any refinement is applied. Some traditions also count from the Moon and from Venus in addition to the ascendant, which widens the net further.
A rule that flags a substantial portion of the population is not a useful rule on its own. It was never meant to be used on its own. The exceptions are what make it precise.
When is mangal dosha cancelled?
Cancellation is called parihara. The conditions below are the ones in common classical use, drawn from the tradition that runs through Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra, Phaladeepika and Saravali. They are not obscure. Any astrologer doing a careful matching will run through them.
Mars in its own sign or exalted
Mars in Aries or Scorpio, which it rules, or in Capricorn, where it is exalted, is a planet in a comfortable seat. A well-placed Mars behaves quite differently from an afflicted one, and the dosha is held to be substantially reduced or removed.
Both charts carry the dosha
The most widely applied cancellation of all. Where both partners are manglik, the affliction is considered to cancel between them. This alone accounts for a large share of matchings that a quick check would have refused.
Jupiter or the Moon in aspect or conjunction
Jupiter is the great benefic and its aspect steadies what it touches. Where Jupiter conjoins Mars or aspects it, the harsher expression is tempered. A strong Moon in conjunction is read similarly, softening rather than removing.
The sign-specific exceptions
Several classical exceptions turn on which sign Mars occupies in a given house rather than the house alone. Mars in the second house in Gemini or Virgo, in the fourth in Aries or Scorpio, in the seventh in Capricorn or Cancer, in the eighth in Sagittarius or Pisces, in the twelfth in Taurus or Libra — each is treated as an exception in common practice. This is the level of detail a two-minute reading cannot reach.
Saturn in aspect
Saturn slows and disciplines. Where it aspects Mars, the impulsive quality the dosha is concerned with is held in check, and several schools treat this as mitigating.
The strength of the seventh house
Marriage is read from the seventh house and its lord, with Venus as the significator. Where the seventh lord is strong and Venus is well placed, the chart supports marriage regardless of where Mars sits. A dosha is a stress on the structure; it is not the structure.
Age
The intensity is widely held to reduce with age, commonly reckoned from around twenty-eight. Treat this as the softest of the conditions. It is practice convention rather than a firm rule, and no careful astrologer would rest a verdict on it alone.
Two charts, one verdict, opposite readings
Consider two people, both told they are manglik because Mars sits in the seventh house.
In the first chart Mars is in Capricorn, where it is exalted, and Jupiter aspects it. Two independent cancellations apply. The seventh lord is strong. On a careful reading this is not a chart that needs any special caution about marriage.
In the second, Mars is in Gemini, unaspected by any benefic, with the seventh lord weak and Venus afflicted. The same one-line verdict was issued for both. They describe entirely different situations.
That is the whole argument. The verdict is not the reading.
What a careful matching actually examines
Ashtakoota guna milan, the thirty-six point scoring most people have heard of, is one part of a matching and not the whole of it. A proper matching looks at:
- The strength and placement of the seventh house and its lord in both charts
- Venus, as the significator of marriage, in both charts
- Mangal dosha with every cancellation condition tested, not merely noted
- The dasha periods both people are running and what falls in the first years of marriage
- Longevity and health indications, read soberly and without alarm
- Progeny indications from the fifth house, where that matters to the family
- Temperament from the Moon, which decides whether two people can live together day to day
A matching that reports a guna score and a manglik flag and nothing else has not examined the marriage. It has run a filter.
What to ask the person who told you
If a matching has come back manglik, these questions are reasonable and any competent astrologer will welcome them:
- From which reference was the dosha counted — the ascendant, the Moon, or Venus?
- Which sign is Mars in, and which house?
- Is Mars in its own sign, exalted, debilitated, or none of those?
- Does Jupiter, the Moon or Saturn aspect or conjoin it?
- Does the other chart also carry the dosha?
- Which cancellation conditions did you test, and which applied?
- How strong is the seventh lord, and where is Venus?
An astrologer who has done the work can answer all seven without hesitation. One who cannot has given you a filter result and called it a reading.
None of this is an argument that mangal dosha does not exist, or that remedies are never needed. It is an argument that the verdict deserves the full analysis before a family acts on it — and that a great many manglik verdicts do not survive that analysis.
Where this leaves you
If a manglik finding has stalled a marriage discussion in your family, have the charts read properly before anyone decides anything. If the dosha genuinely applies after every condition has been tested, you will be told so plainly, and there are classical remedies that address it. If it does not apply, you will have that in writing, which is often what the family actually needs.
Guruji reads kundali matching in person at Whitefield or online. Bring both charts, or the birth details for both people, and expect the questions above to be answered.
Common questions
What is mangal dosha in simple terms?
Mars placed in the first, second, fourth, seventh, eighth or twelfth house of a birth chart is held to put strain on married life. It is also called kuja dosha or manglik. It describes a stress on the marriage indications in a chart, not a prediction that a marriage will fail.
Can mangal dosha be cancelled?
Yes, and the conditions are part of the classical tradition rather than a modern softening of it. Mars in its own sign or exalted, both partners carrying the dosha, Jupiter or the Moon in aspect or conjunction, several sign-specific exceptions, and a strong seventh lord are all recognised cancellations. A careful matching tests each one.
Is a manglik and manglik marriage safe?
This is the most widely applied cancellation in practice. Where both charts carry the dosha it is considered to cancel between them. The rest of the matching still needs doing, but the manglik objection itself is generally treated as answered.
Does mangal dosha reduce with age?
It is commonly held to weaken from around twenty-eight. Treat this as the softest of the conditions — it is practice convention rather than a firm textual rule, and it should never be the only reason a dosha is set aside.
Do I still need a remedy if the dosha is cancelled?
Usually not. If the cancellation conditions genuinely apply, the affliction is considered answered and prescribing an expensive remedy anyway is hard to justify. Guruji prescribes remedies where the chart calls for them and says so plainly when it does not.
Why do two astrologers disagree about whether I am manglik?
Most often because they counted from different references. Some traditions count Mars only from the ascendant, others also from the Moon and from Venus. A chart can be manglik from one reference and clear from another. Ask which reference was used — the answer usually explains the disagreement.
Is mangal dosha checked differently in South and North Indian charts?
The chart is drawn differently but the underlying planetary positions are identical, so the dosha is the same. What differs is convention: South Indian practice, where it is called kuja dosha, tends to weigh the sign-specific exceptions heavily. The diagram changes; the sky does not.
